In line with this objective, Odisha government has given the investment approval to the Tata Steel Processing and Distribution Ltd for setting up a manufacturing unit at an investment of INR 92 crore.

The proposal by Tata Steel Processing was submitted to set up a manufacturing unit of steel doors and windows with a capacity of 1.80 units per year at Kalinganagar industrial complex, Jajpur, Odisha. The project is likely to create employment opportunities for 250 people.

Also in the month of Jun’18, the state government has also approved a proposal by Tata Steel for utilising 1,735 acres of land for developing a private industrial park at Gopalpur in Ganjam district.

Of the 2,970 acres of land handed over to Industrial Infrastructure Development Corp (IDCO) for setting up a steel plant at Gopalpur by Tata Steel, 1,235 acres notified by the Central government as SEZ may be utilized by the Tata Steel Special Economic Zone Ltd (TSSEZL). The balance 1,735 acre may be utilized by the Tata Steel for setting up a private industrial park as domestic tariff area.

Odisha allocates land to JSW Steel to set-up steel plant in the state

In case of JSW Steel, the Odisha government has allocated land to JSW Steel for its proposed mega steel plant in the state and the size of the land allocated is about 2,900 acres.

The Odisha government has received a proposal from JSW Steel in 2016 to set up a greenfield steel plant in the state. The original proposal of the company was to set up a 10 MnT capacity steel plant, however later on the company revised the proposed capacity from 10 MnT to 13.2 MnT per annum accompanied by the latest technology. There is news in the market that the government has handed over the same land acquired originally for a 12 MnT steel project proposed by POSCO.

As per the reports, JSW Steel had pledged an investment of INR 50,000 crore on the steel project and associated facilities. The steel plant is expected to go on stream in four years from the zero date and when fully operational, it will create jobs for around 50,000 people. To optimise raw material costs, JSW Steel has committed an investment of INR 3,700 crore on a slurry pipeline for transporting 30 MnT of iron ore each year from Joda to Paradip.

The steel plants investments in Odisha

At present, steel plants in Odisha have an installed capacity of about 33 MTPA, with the commitment for another over 56 MTPA in the next few years as major proponents like SAIL, Tata and JSPL have plans for expansion of their installed capacities.

The steel industry in the state has seen as many as 45 firms sign memoranda of understanding (MoU) with the state government for steel projects and 33 other firms are working on steel plants. Of these, 10 projects with a committed capacity of 13.13 MTPA are in the project implementation stage and are likely to be commissioned soon. The remaining steel plants have already been commissioned with an installed capacity of 25.7 MTPA and a committed capacity of 47.84 MTPA.
