Mining News Pro - Canada-headquartered Lucara Diamonds has recovered Botswana’s largest fancy pink gem yet, as well as one of the world’s largest pink diamonds on record, weighing 62.7 ct.
The company has named the diamond Boitumelo, which means joy in Setswana.
The impressive diamond measures 26x17x16 mm and is classified as a high-quality fancy pink Type IIa gem.
It was recovered at the company’s Karowe mine.
Lucara also recovered a 22.21 ct fancy pink gem of similar quality, along with two additional pink gems of similar colour and purity, weighing 11.17 ct and 5.05 ct, respectively.
CEO Eira Thomas says the company is delighted to announce another historic diamond with the recovery of the Boitumelo, and pleased to demonstrate the continued potential for large, coloured diamonds from the South Lobe production.
“These remarkable pink diamonds join a collection of significant diamond recoveries in 2021 produced from the EM/PK(S) unit of South Lobe, which forms a key economic driver for the proposed underground mine at Karowe.”
