Mining News Pro - SIMPEC has been awarded a $10 million contract to build an 800-room camp at Fortescue Metals Group’s Eliwana iron ore project in the Pilbara, Western Australia.
According to Mining News Pro - ATCO Structures and Logistics awarded the contract, which will commence in mid-2019, representing SIMPEC’s largest single contract award to date.
The contract adds to a portfolio of camp work packages that SIMPEC has won, including at the completed Iluka Resources Cataby mineral sands project and Rio Tinto’s West Angelas iron ore project, which is still in progress.
The scope of work involves the design, supply, construction, testing and commissioning of the electrical, communications and dry fire systems of the mine camp, which is set to be delivered over a nine-month period.
It is SIMPEC’s first contract win at a Fortescue project, which managing director Mark Dimasi noted as a significant development for the company.
“To see the fruits of the concerted effort during the Fortescue Eliwana tender phase is very rewarding for the team,” Dimasi said.
“This Tier 1 project [allows] the company to construct alongside some of Australia’s biggest construction companies.”
Fortescue approved the $1.7 billion Eliwana project in May last year, signalling the company’s increased focus on premium iron ore to support China’s interest in acquiring higher-grade raw materials.
