Exxaro Looks to fill Eskom`s coal shortage:

Market reports have informed that South African coal miner Exxaro is in talks to revive the conditions at Eskom which has been hit by supply shortages.

The availability at Eskom`s 10 power stations has been fewer than 20 days of coal supply which poses a threat to the power supply in Africa`s most industrialised economy.

Exxaro already provides coal to Eskom`s Matimba, Matla and Medupi power stations, and now the company is aiming to supplement its supplies to Eskom via short-term contracts.

Eskom-South Africa`s largest power producer, has had financial difficulties due to large debts, and its coal supply contracts with domestic producers are expiring soon.

There is a risk that after the contracts expires; the utility will not be able to secure coal at prices it can afford, resulting in the South African Government potentially intervening and requiring producers to divert sales from export markets to the domestic market, which could reduce South Africa`s exports.
