According to Mining News Pro -According to sources, at least seven workers have been reported injured when a fire broke out inside a non-operational oil tanker at Gadani shipbreaking yard on this Sunday, the 14th of October.

According to Ghani Seth, Vice-chairperson of the shipbreaking yard, the fire broke out in a ship in Plot 10 which consumed the whole area. He also conveyed that the fire could not be controlled early on and the fire brigade did not arrive at the scene promptly. Seth said that the fire erupted despite them having taken precautionary safety measures.

The local police communicated to a news channel that three of the injured were in critical condition when they were being rescued. The injured were shifted to Civil Hospital Karachi for medical treatment.

Bashir Mehmoodani, the president of the Gadani shipbreaking workers association, reported that the shipbreaking company owners just want the work to be finished as soon as possible, even if that entails putting the laborers` lives at risk.

According to Mehmoodani, these employers demand one month`s work be done in a week and are only looking out for their interests. The owners make billions per annum but still have not set up a fire brigade in the yard nor do they care to ensure that safety measures are in place for their workers, as narrated by Mehmoodani. That is why such incidents have become a norm in Gadani.

The news comes not long after a ship was set ablaze almost a week ago, but no human loss or injury was reported.

The fires follow after Pakistan`s decision to remove an 18-month ban on the dismantling of oil tankers, which was sanctioned as a response to a series of deadly fires in Gadani. In November 2016, the demolition of Aces tanker set a fire, killing 26 workers and wounding 58 more. A second fire erupted in the same vessel in November 2017.

In later news, it has been known that the Balochistan chief minister, Jam Kamal Khan, has taken notice of this fire and has commented that the government will bear the expenses for the treatment of those affected. The laborers have also been promised Rs 0.1 million each. MNA Danish Kumar has opened an investigation into the fire.

Gadani market remains in ‘Wait and Watch’ mode in order to evaluate moves of the central Government to resolve currency issues. Sentiments remain unstable with prices assessed unchanged on weekly basis. No new sale reported as many of the buyers having tonnage in hand remained away to divert vessels to other markets.
