Iran Iron Ore Exports Up 17% in Sep`18; India Imported 50,000 MT Ore
Mining News Pro - According to the data maintained by SteelMint, Iran has exported 1.09 MnT iron ore via bulk shipments in the sixth month of Iranian year (during 23rd Aug- 22nd Sep`18). The exports witnessed rise of 17% on monthly basis in Sep`18 as against Aug`18 exports at 0.93 MnT.

According to Mining News Pro -On yearly basis, the exports have witnessed 46% drop as compared to Sep`17 exports at 2 MnT.

For the duration Apr-Sep`18, the exports witnessed at 6.48 MnT, down sharply by 36% against 10.15 MnT during same duration last year (Apr-Sep`17).

As per reports, Iran is planning to abandon iron ore exports in the next two years to fulfill the domestic demand in Iran which will be around 160 MnT by 2025.

India imported 50,000 MT iron ore from Iran

As per data, India imported 50,000 MT iron ore concentrate from Iran in Sept`18. As per sources the material imported will be used for making pellets in southern India for further processing into steel making.

China continued to be the largest importer of Iranian iron ore for Sep`18 at 0.87 MnT, contributing 80% of total Iranian export share. However, the export to China witnessed drop on monthly basis as against being 0.90 MnT in Aug`18. Besides, shipping cost is another constraint for Iranian exports due to rising freight cost owing to limited number of shipping lines between Iranian and Chinese ports.

Iranian exports to UAE, Malaysia, India and Sri lanka contributed 20% of total monthly imports against being nil a month before.

The exports to UAE, Malaysia, India and Sri Lanka marked at 0.07 MnT, 0.03 MnT, 0.05 MnT and 0.02 MnT respectively.

Iran`s domestic iron ore production continues to rise

According to IMIRDO, Iran produced a total of 18.42 MnT of iron ore concentrate during first five months of current Iranian year (21st Mar-22nd Aug), up 19% compared to output of previous year same duration at 15.54 MnT.

Rising crude steel capacities in Iran

Iran crude steel production for the month of Aug`18 was around 1.98 MnT, stable on monthly basis. On yearly basis, the output recorded increase of 9% as compared to Aug`17 output at 1.82 MnT.

According to Ardeshir Saad Muhammadi, Deputy Director IMIDRO Mining and Mining Industries Development, Iran`s crude steel capacity is likely to be expanded to 38 MnT p.a. by end of this year, it currently stands at 32 MnT p.a. Furthermore Iran plans to increase its crude steel capacity to 55 MnT p.a by 2025. Rising crude steel capacities will further escalate iron ore demand in country.
